INTENDANT
. s. m.
Celui qui est chargé de régir les biens, de conduire et de surveiller la maison d'un prince, d'un grand seigneur, d'un riche particulier. L'intendant de la maison d'un prince. L'intendant d'un grand seigneur, d'une grande maison. Depuis qu'il a recueilli ce riche héritage, il a pris un intendant. Donner des ordres à son intendant. Il a un intendant qui le vole.   Il se dit également de Certains fonctionnaires qui surveillent et dirigent un service public ou un grand établissement. Intendant de la marine. Intendant militaire. Intendant des bâtiments.   Il se disait pareillement, autrefois, de Ceux qui étaient à la tête de l'administration des provinces, ou qui avaient des attributions relatives aux finances du royaume. Intendant des finances. Intendant de province. Intendant de justice, police et finances en telle province. Intendant du Languedoc, etc.
